The Antminer S23 XP Hyd is the first Antminer under 9 J/TH. Who is it for?

Unveiled in Hong Kong in August and shipping from November, it will make the cheapest bitcoin of any machine Bitmain has announced. It also costs more per terahash than almost anything else we would put in the same room. Both facts are the point.

What Bitmain announced

Bitmain launched the S23 XP Hyd at WDMS Global 2026, held in Hong Kong on 27–28 August under the theme "Ride the Cycle. Hydro Prevails." The headline numbers are 600 TH/s from 5,340 W at a 35 °C coolant inlet: 8.9 J/TH. Bitmain’s previous best was the S23 Hyd at 9.5, which makes this the first Antminer rated below nine.

Physically it is a conventional hydro miner rather than a rack unit: 409 × 176 × 208 mm and 15.8 kg, three-phase 380–415 V, coolant at 20–50 °C and 8–10 litres a minute through OD10 connections, antifreeze, pure water or deionised water. It carries Bitmain’s standard 365-day warranty. On Bitmain’s shop it is listed at $25.50 a terahash — $15,300 a unit — shipping from November 2026, with Bitmain’s announcement putting deliveries between November and January.

The first Antminer rated under nine joules a terahash — and the smallest step Bitmain’s water line has taken in years.

A small step, priced like a big one

Put it beside the machine it replaces and the size of the step is clear. Against the S23 Hyd it adds 20 TH/s and drops 170 W, which works out to about 6% better efficiency. The step before that — from the S21 XP Hyd’s 12 J/TH to the S23 Hyd’s 9.5 — was more than 20%. This is a refinement of a generation, not a new one.

The price is not a refinement. It is about $25.73 a terahash through us, against $22.96 for the S23 Hyd today and $10.86 for the S23e Hyd 2U — a machine from the same generation at 10 J/TH. One mining analyst put it plainly the week it launched: Bitmain is asking a significant premium for the efficiency.

Run the numbers at our UAE site and both halves of the story show up at once. It makes a bitcoin for about $29,300 of electricity — less than the S23 Hyd’s $31,300, and among the cheapest coins of anything we can quote. But it returns roughly 32% in its first year, against about 34% for the S23 Hyd and 63% for the S23e 2U. The cheapest coin and the best first year belong to different machines.

Judged by the water-cooled machines before it

It has not shipped, so it has no record of its own. What it does have is a lineage, and we have run every step of it.

The S19 XP Hyd was the efficiency flagship of 2022 at about 21 J/TH, made the cheapest coin of its generation and paid for its hardware with years to spare. The S21 XP Hyd, at 12 J/TH, has spent its entire life so far at our UAE site without ever needing to move. The S23 Hyd makes the cheapest bitcoin we have measured to date. Three water-cooled flagships, three machines that did what their specifications said they would.

The S23 XP Hyd is the next step on the same line, in the same shape of box, from the same S23 generation as the last of them. The pattern it has to follow is a good one.

Who it is for

Owners planning through the 2028 halving and beyond. A halving takes away distance from a machine’s break-even line, and efficiency is how you buy that distance. At 8.9 J/TH the line sits lower than for anything else Bitmain has announced — roughly $13 of hashprice per petahash per day at 6¢, and about $8 at 3.9¢. It is the machine most likely to still be worth switching on after the halving after next.

Sites where power, not money, is the limit. If a site has a fixed number of megawatts, efficiency is hashrate: a megawatt of these carries about 112 PH/s, where a megawatt of 13 J/TH machines carries about 77. When the power contract is the scarce thing — and it usually is, because the power is the land — the most efficient box turns the same connection into the most bitcoin.

Not for someone who wants the largest first-year return on the money. At today’s prices the cheaper machines of the same generation return more in year one, and the S21e XP Hyd 3U, a generation older, returns about 58%. Buy the S23 XP Hyd for the runway, not for the first twelve months: more of its return arrives after the 2028 halving than before it, which is exactly where 8.9 J/TH earns its keep.

Efficiency is how you buy distance from the break-even line. This is the most distance Bitmain has ever sold.

What would have to go wrong

Bullish is not the same as blind, so here is what we will be watching.

The first batches. From announcement to first shipments is about three months — shorter than recent water-cooled flagships had between launch and delivery. Less time between the two is less time for anything to surface before machines reach sites.

Nameplate against the real room. Bitmain rates it at a 35 °C coolant inlet and allows its power to vary by ±5% around the typical figure. On the previous generation, an operator testing a batch of S21 XP Hyd units reported that only a couple hit the advertised efficiency on stock firmware. A few percent either way does not change who this machine is for, but it is the difference between 8.9 J/TH and 9.3, and it is what field time will tell us first.

The price curve. Every Bitmain water-cooled flagship so far has become meaningfully cheaper after launch. Buying at $25.50 a terahash is paying for being early. For the owner planning to run it for five years that premium is spread thin; for anyone else it is the reason to wait.

None of those is a flaw in the machine. They are the ordinary questions a first batch answers — and hosted in the UAE, with a manufacturer warranty centre close to the facility and the machine inside its 365-day warranty, they are cheap questions to have answered.

Our read

The S23 XP Hyd will make the cheapest bitcoin of any machine Bitmain has announced, from a line of water-cooled flagships that has done what it promised every generation we have run it. It is not the best first-year return on the board, and it does not pretend to be.

If you are buying hashrate for the next twelve months, the cheaper boxes of the same generation will pay you back faster. If you are buying for the 2028 halving and the years after it, this is the one to wait for.
