Machine review · Sep 21, 2026 · 7 min read
The most efficient air-cooled machine we stock, and the one we put S19-era buyers into. 13.5 J/TH makes a bitcoin for about $42,500 of electricity at 6¢ today — roughly 40% cheaper than the machine it usually replaces.
Bitmain Antminer S21 XP (270 TH/s)
The S21 XP is 270 TH/s from 3,645 W — 13.5 J/TH, air-cooled, announced June 2024. At our Argentina site it makes a bitcoin for about $42,500 of electricity and returns roughly 37% in its first year. Both of those are the best numbers of any air-cooled machine we can ship today.
Run at 6¢ since its price settled in early 2025, it has mined and kept 0.077 BTC for $3,274 of power — $3,017 of cashflow against a $9,580 landed cost, which is what eighteen months into a four-year life looks like. Between now and the 2028 halving it has another 0.075 BTC in it, worth about $6,177 with bitcoin back at its previous high: roughly 1.0× its hardware covered by the halving, with the machine still running afterwards.
The reason to buy it over anything cheaper is that it will still be worth switching on when the cheaper machines are not. The reason to hesitate is the S21 generation’s hashboards, which crack solder joints on thermal cycles — see below. Neither of those is a reason to buy something less efficient.
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Quality control | 8/10 | A mature high-volume board with no pattern of complaint beyond the ordinary. Like every generation it develops faults with age; unlike most, the repair path for it is well trodden. |
| Longevity | 10/10 | At 13.5 J/TH it is the only air-cooled machine we stock that still clears its power at 6¢ well beyond the 2028 halving, and it has years past that at 3.9¢. |
| Efficiency | 8/10 | 13.5 J/TH is the best air-cooled figure we can ship, and about 40% less power per terahash than the S19K Pro generation it usually replaces. |
| Cashflow | 8/10 | Makes a bitcoin for about $42,500 of electricity at 6¢ and returns roughly 37% in year one. Eighteen months in it has covered about a third of its hardware, and is on track to cover all of it by the 2028 halving. |
| Serviceability | 9/10 | Published repair guides, a deep parts market and benches everywhere. Hosted with us, Argentina repairs are billed at the cost of parts and the UAE has a warranty centre nearby. |
Weighted on what this machine costs to run and how long it will keep being worth running. Efficiency carries most of it, because at 13.5 J/TH the S21 XP is the only air-cooled machine we stock that will still be clearing its power at 6¢ after the 2028 halving.
The S21 XP is the efficiency model of the S21 line: 270 TH/s from 3,645 W in the air-cooled version, 13.5 J/TH, announced in June 2024. There is a 300 TH/s immersion variant on the same boards. Where the base S21 traded efficiency for price at 17.5 J/TH, the XP is what you buy when the power bill is the constraint rather than the purchase.
For anyone coming off S19-era hardware the arithmetic is blunt. A 23 J/TH machine and a 13.5 J/TH machine on the same electricity bill do not produce the same amount of bitcoin, and the gap compounds every time difficulty rises. That is the entire argument for this machine and it does not need embellishing.
Every machine on this site will develop a fault eventually — that is what the repair market exists for, and it is priced into how we host. The S21 generation is among the best-supported hardware in mining: published domain maps and repair guides, a deep parts market, and no bench that has not worked on one. A fault typically presents as a missing chain rather than a dead miner, because a failed chip breaks the chain and everything downstream goes quiet, which makes it quick to locate.
What that costs you here is the part that matters. Hosted with us in Argentina, a repair is billed at the cost of the parts and nothing else. In the UAE there is a manufacturer warranty centre close to the facility. A board failure is a few days and a line item rather than an event, which is why we are comfortable putting clients into machines that a home miner would be right to worry about.
Every ASIC develops faults eventually. What matters is what one costs you when it does.
At 6¢ the S21 XP makes a bitcoin for about $42,500 of electricity today. The same site puts an S19K Pro at over $70,000 a coin. That gap is the whole reason to spend more on the box, and it widens every time difficulty rises, because the less efficient machine crosses the line where it stops clearing its power first.
Over its run so far, electricity has averaged about $40,300 a coin. That is a lifetime average across a period when hashprice was higher than it is now, so treat it as history rather than a forecast — today’s figure is the one to plan on.
Yes, and more so than when it launched, because it is half the price it was. $6,089 in October 2024 against about $3,072 now, for the same 270 TH/s at the same 13.5 J/TH. The machine did not get worse; the market repriced the whole generation.
The honest caveat is that hydro has moved past it. If you can run a water loop, machines at 9.5 to 11 J/TH make cheaper bitcoin than this does and the difference is not small. The S21 XP is the answer to a specific question — what is the most efficient thing I can put in an air-cooled rack — and it is a good answer to that question and not to any other.
This is the machine we put people into when they ask what to replace an S19 with, and it is the machine we would buy for our own racks at an air-cooled site. It is not exciting. It is 13.5 J/TH, it is in stock, and it will still be clearing its power at 6¢ when the machines either side of it in price will not.
Buy it if you are air-cooled and planning past 2028. If your site can run hydro, spend the same money there instead — the efficiency ceiling is meaningfully higher and this machine cannot reach it.
