Each marker is the first release of an Antminer generation. The grey step line is the best efficiency any bitcoin miner on the market offered on that date: from more than 250 J/TH in 2015 to under 10 today.
New generations cluster ahead of halvings, when the subsidy is about to be cut in half and only the most efficient machines keep full margins. The generations launched into a bull market — the S9 in 2016, the S19 in 2020 — are the ones that paid for themselves fastest.
