The 30-year Treasury yield closed at 5.64%

The US Treasury's daily curve put the 30-year yield at 5.64% at the close on 29 September, up from 5.53% on 24 September and 5.60% the day before. The 10-year closed at 5.16%, according to Treasury's published rates.

Yahoo Finance reported the 30-year touching 5.61% during the day, the highest since 2002, and pointed to rising oil prices feeding inflation expectations and traders betting on another Fed rate rise.

Bitcoin ended 29 September at $83,471 on our price chart, 1.2% below the day before and 3.6% below its $86,608 close on 22 September. Higher yields make the safest assets pay more, and our Treasury yields chart shows how far they have climbed this month.

The 30-year has gone from 5.54% on 25 September to 5.64%, and the 10-year from 5.06% to 5.16%.

Coinbase can now clear its own derivatives

The CFTC registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organisation, with the status recorded on 28 September. Unchained reports that the approval covers only fully collateralised futures, options on futures and swaps, which means the clearinghouse must hold enough funds to cover a trader's maximum loss at all times. Margin trading is outside it.

Robinhood announces bitcoin perpetuals for US customers

At its HOOD Summit in Houston on 29 September, Robinhood said it will offer crypto perpetual futures to eligible US customers in the coming months, through Robinhood Derivatives and Bitstamp. Leverage will reach 10 times on bitcoin and ether, and 3 times on other coins, according to The Block and CoinDesk.

Nothing has launched yet. Futures open interest across the major venues stood at $34.5 billion on 29 September on our open interest chart, down from $38.6 billion on 23 September, a fall of 10.5%.

Illinois drafts a 0.2% tax on crypto transactions

The Illinois Department of Revenue published draft rules for its new digital asset tax: 0.2% of the value of a transaction, applied irrespective of profit or loss, from 1 January 2027, as Crypto Briefing reports. Cointelegraph adds that stablecoins are covered, NFTs are excluded, and comments are open until 30 October.

The rules have not yet been filed with the state's Secretary of State or its Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, so they are still a draft. None of the coverage we opened says whether bitcoin mining rewards would count as a taxable transaction, so that question is open.

What it means for miners

Hashprice, what one petahash of mining power earns in a day, was $39.77 on 29 September, down from $41.31 on 22 September, a fall of 3.7% that tracks the bitcoin price almost exactly. Difficulty has not moved from 132.8 trillion, so the coins a petahash earns are unchanged and the whole dip is in the price. The hashprice chart has the daily series, and What is hashprice explains how to turn it into what a machine earns.

None of today's stories changes a machine's electricity cost or the coins it produces. Fees are still a small part of what the network pays: 3.4 bitcoin on 28 September against about 450 in block rewards. A miner who keeps the coins is unaffected by which way yields move on any one day.
