Bitcoin today: under $80,000, ETFs lose over $770 million in two days, Fed meets Tuesday

Bitcoin touched $79,146 on Saturday, its lowest in more than a month, as long positions were force-closed and the US spot ETFs lost money for a second day. It was back near $80,800 on Sunday. A petahash earns what it did last week, and a coin still costs under a quarter of its price to make.

Bitcoin falls under $80,000 for the first time since 15 October

Bitcoin fell as low as $79,146 on Saturday 24 October, its weakest level in more than a month, then climbed back above $80,000 and traded at about $80,800 early on Sunday, Investing.com reported. CoinGape called the first dip under $80,000 since 15 October, with about $219 million of long positions liquidated within an hour and more than $200 million of that in the first fifteen minutes.

Counted over 24 hours, CoinGlass put total crypto liquidations at $727.78 million with longs almost 84% of it, according to Coin-Turk, and above $810 million with about $689 million of longs, per Investing.com. The totals differ because the windows do. Our own series counts bitcoin futures only: $134 million of longs were closed on 22 October, $81 million on 23 October and $157 million on 24 October, $372 million in three days against $36 million of shorts. Bitcoin closed at $84,019 on 22 October and read $80,520 on 25 October, 4.2% lower.

More than 90% of the bitcoin positions closed in three days were bets on a rise.

US ETFs lose $773.5 million across Thursday and Friday

US spot bitcoin ETFs had net outflows of $635.6 million on Thursday 22 October, the largest in a day since the $691.7 million of 25 June in our ETF flows series. BlackRock's IBIT lost $254.1 million and Fidelity's FBTC $217.5 million, CoinGape reported. Another $137.9 million left on Friday, per Coin-Turk, $773.5 million in two sessions.

Oil above $117 and a 2.6% fall in the Nasdaq

Brent crude traded above $117 a barrel on Sunday morning amid the war with Iran, Investing.com reported. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.6% on Thursday, its steepest loss since early June, according to Coin-Turk.

CoinGape added that President Trump's remarks on 23 October raised the possibility of further military action against Iran, without details on timing. Higher oil feeds inflation worries just ahead of the Fed's meeting.

The Fed meets on Tuesday and Wednesday, with inflation data on Thursday

The Federal Reserve's rate-setting committee meets on 27 and 28 October, according to the Fed's calendar. It is not one of the meetings that comes with new economic projections. Investing.com said traders are watching whether policymakers hold rates or tighten further, with the 10-year Treasury yield at 4.988%.

September PCE inflation data follows on 29 October, CoinGape noted.

Difficulty has not moved since 16 October, and the next step points up

Network difficulty has stood at 140.58 trillion since the 16 October adjustment, which raised it 5.9%. The next adjustment is 692 blocks away. At the pace blocks have arrived so far, our difficulty page estimates it at about +4.8%, a figure that moves with every block until the day.

Difficulty only changes on that schedule, so a weekend of price moves leaves the mining side untouched until then.

What it means for miners

A petahash earned $36.43 a day on 24 October, 0.000449 bitcoin, on our hashprice chart. The weekend moved the price of a coin and left what a machine produces where it was.

On the 8.9 J/TH Antminer S23 XP Hyd, electricity at Nigeria's 3.9¢ makes a bitcoin for about $18,541, 23% of its $80,520 price on 25 October. That is electricity only, at today's hashprice, and output is not guaranteed. A dip is the stretch when an efficient machine on cheap power stacks the most coins for each dollar, and the coins kept are the ones that count.

A coin that costs $18,541 to make is on the market for $80,520.
