Average block size opened 2016 at 0.49 MB (January 1, 2016) and closed at 0.80 MB (December 31, 2016), up 62.9%. The high was 0.98 MB on October 27, 2016 and the low 0.49 MB on January 1, 2016.

Blocks have been effectively full since 2016. Since SegWit in 2017 a block can weigh up to 4 MB, so an average above 1 MB means users are paying for the extra space. Fewer transactions per block at the same size means bigger transactions, which is what inscriptions and batching look like.
