Average block size opened 2019 at 0.80 MB (January 1, 2019) and closed at 0.98 MB (December 31, 2019), up 22.5%. The high was 1.31 MB on December 17, 2019 and the low 0.70 MB on July 28, 2019.

Blocks have been effectively full since 2016. Since SegWit in 2017 a block can weigh up to 4 MB, so an average above 1 MB means users are paying for the extra space. Fewer transactions per block at the same size means bigger transactions, which is what inscriptions and batching look like.
