Average block size opened 2022 at 0.70 MB (January 1, 2022) and closed at 1.07 MB (December 31, 2022), up 53.6%. The high was 1.57 MB on November 24, 2022 and the low 0.70 MB on January 1, 2022.

Blocks have been effectively full since 2016. Since SegWit in 2017 a block can weigh up to 4 MB, so an average above 1 MB means users are paying for the extra space. Fewer transactions per block at the same size means bigger transactions, which is what inscriptions and batching look like.
