Average block size opened 2018 at 1.04 MB (January 1, 2018) and closed at 0.89 MB (December 31, 2018), down 14.9%. The high was 1.22 MB on December 7, 2018 and the low 0.43 MB on April 8, 2018.

Blocks have been effectively full since 2016. Since SegWit in 2017 a block can weigh up to 4 MB, so an average above 1 MB means users are paying for the extra space. Fewer transactions per block at the same size means bigger transactions, which is what inscriptions and batching look like.
