Average block size opened 2020 at 0.64 MB (January 1, 2020) and closed at 1.28 MB (December 31, 2020), up 98.5%. The high was 1.42 MB on September 6, 2020 and the low 0.64 MB on January 1, 2020.

Blocks have been effectively full since 2016. Since SegWit in 2017 a block can weigh up to 4 MB, so an average above 1 MB means users are paying for the extra space. Fewer transactions per block at the same size means bigger transactions, which is what inscriptions and batching look like.
