Average block size opened 2026 at 1.44 MB (January 1, 2026) and closed at 1.61 MB (September 21, 2026), up 11.3%. The high was 1.98 MB on April 30, 2026 and the low 1.44 MB on February 8, 2026.

Blocks have been effectively full since 2016. Since SegWit in 2017 a block can weigh up to 4 MB, so an average above 1 MB means users are paying for the extra space. Fewer transactions per block at the same size means bigger transactions, which is what inscriptions and batching look like.
