Average block size opened 2023 at 0.84 MB (January 1, 2023) and closed at 1.70 MB (December 31, 2023), up 101.7%. The high was 2.52 MB on February 12, 2023 and the low 0.84 MB on January 1, 2023.

Blocks have been effectively full since 2016. Since SegWit in 2017 a block can weigh up to 4 MB, so an average above 1 MB means users are paying for the extra space. Fewer transactions per block at the same size means bigger transactions, which is what inscriptions and batching look like.
