The average size of a bitcoin block in megabytes, and how many transactions each block carried.
1.61 MB on Sep 20, 2026, against 1.57 MB a year earlier.
Blocks have been effectively full since 2016. Since SegWit in 2017 a block can weigh up to 4 MB, so an average above 1 MB means users are paying for the extra space. Fewer transactions per block at the same size means bigger transactions, which is what inscriptions and batching look like.
