Average block size opened 2017 at 0.70 MB (January 1, 2017) and closed at 1.04 MB (December 31, 2017), up 48.5%. The high was 1.08 MB on December 28, 2017 and the low 0.58 MB on September 17, 2017.

Blocks have been effectively full since 2016. Since SegWit in 2017 a block can weigh up to 4 MB, so an average above 1 MB means users are paying for the extra space. Fewer transactions per block at the same size means bigger transactions, which is what inscriptions and batching look like.
